Volunteer to build homes, communities, and hope. The information below outlines GDM Habitat’s policies regarding youth volunteering.

CONSTRUCTION/REPAIR YOUTH VOLUNTEER

Requirements for Youth Participation

  • Youth must be 16 or 17 yrs. old.
  • Youth must be accompanied by an adult (21+ yrs. old) who is responsible for them. Youth groups volunteering must have a ratio of one adult to every four youths.
  • If a volunteer is under 18 years of age, they will need a parent or guardian sign their waiver before they are able to volunteer.
  • Volunteers must wear all necessary PPE to complete assigned tasks.

Volunteer Activities for 16 & 17 Yr Olds 

  • Use of non-powered tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers, handsaws, caulk guns, staplers, paint brushes and paint rollers.
  • Operate lawn mowers, leaf blowers, trimmers, cutters, weed eaters, edgers
  • Help load and unload materials onto or from motor vehicles.
  • Remove materials (carpet, flooring, tile) so long as proper protective gear is worn.
  • Work from a height of 6ft or lower.
  • Cannot participate in Blitz Builds which are accelerated construction events where multiple homes are built within a few weeks time.

Any high school vocational/apprentice program interested in partnering with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity should contact Volunteer Engagement volunteer@gdmhabitat.org  for more information on how to get involved.

RESTORE YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

Requirements for Youth Participation

  • Youth must be 14-17 yrs. old.
  • Youth 14-15 yrs. old must be accompanied by an adult (21+ yrs. old) who is responsible for them, unless youth is completing hours for their silver cord/service learning program and has made arrangements with volunteer engagement.
  • 14-15 yr. olds may only work in the front of the store and not the back warehouse
  • Youth groups volunteering must have a ratio of one adult to every eight youths.
  • If a volunteer is under 18 years of age, they are required to have a parent or guardian sign their waiver before they are able to volunteer.
  • Youth volunteers must wear all necessary PPE to complete assigned tasks.

Volunteer Activities for 14-15 Yr. Olds  

  • Assisting Customers
  • Carrying out customer orders or purchases
  • Cleaning areas such as displays and floors (may use vacuums and floor waxers)
  • Assisting staff with organization of aisles and stocking merchandise
  • Engaging in landscaping work or grounds maintenance

Volunteer Activities for 16-17 Yr. Olds 

  • Assisting customers
  • Carrying out customer orders or purchases
  • Cleaning & processing donations
  • Engaging in landscaping work or grounds maintenance
  • Organizing aisles and stock inventory
  • Cleaning areas such as displays and floors (may use vacuums and floor waxers)
  • Engaging in landscaping work or grounds maintenance
  • Using non-powered tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers, handsaws, caulk guns, staplers, paint brushes and paint rollers.
  • Working from a height of 6ft. or lower
