GDM Habitat for Humanity Core Crew

A Core Crew Panel Build Assistant is committed to engaging with GDM Habitat’s mission through regular volunteer leadership at Panel Builds. A Panel Build is a sponsorship opportunity that engages partners in building all of the walls to a Habitat home in just one day. The sponsorship commitment, combined with volunteer labor, directly supports Habitat’s work to create and maintain affordable housing. Under the direction of the Field Operations Manager (Tami Benda), this volunteer will lead small groups of other volunteers to expedite the wall building process, maintain quality control, and ensure an excellent volunteer experience.

Duties:

  • Lead one of the following volunteer groups throughout the day of a Panel Build:
    • Sheathing crew
    • Framing crew
    • Cut & layout crew
    • Shed building crew
  • Potential to assist Habitat staff in hauling completed walls the day after, including strapping walls and guiding staff member as they lift walls with telehandler

This position requires the ability and willingness to:

  • Lead, teach, and supervise small groups of volunteers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to complete their tasks
  • Teach the operation of various hand tools and occasional power tools
  • Follow verbal directions, visual diagrams, and written instructions
  • Ensure quality and accuracy of walls being built
  • Exemplify Habitat safety practices and encourage other volunteers to do the same
  • Physically see, hear, and move about an active construction site
  • Arrive on time and ready

Habitat will provide:

  • Building materials, construction tools, and personal protective equipment
  • Staff support and training

Time commitment:

  • Duration of Panel Build (typically 7am – 4:30pm with lunch break)
  • Attend a one hour, pre-build training session provided by the Field Operations Manager to gain understanding of the building process and wall system/diagrams
  • Ideal commitment is 5 or more builds throughout a Panel Build season (approximately April-October)
