Our Core Crew are integral to our goals of building more homes and building better neighborhoods and communities throughout the areas we serve.

Construction skills are not a prerequisite to begin as a Habitat Core Crew member. In fact, most current members came from fields other than construction. As long as you’re willing to help others, we’ll teach you what you need to know.

What is Construction Core Crew?

  • Core crew members are regular volunteers with Habitat who volunteer anywhere from once a week to roughly once a month on either our new construction homes or Home Preservation Program.

What are the benefits of being a Core Crew member?

  • Weekly communications highlighting specific projects and needs
  • Invitation to quarterly meetings for organization updates and educational information
  • Social networking through events such as volunteer appreciation and Core Crew Christmas

How do I get on the Core Crew train of fun?

  • Step 1: If you haven’t already volunteered with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, we encourage you to sign-up  for a couple shifts to see if it’s a great fit for you. No construction experience is needed to volunteer, but we want you to get a feel for what a typical volunteer shift looks like before jumping on the core crew train.
  • Step 2: You have volunteered and you are hooked! Attend an orientation session with Elaine Collet and learn about all the volunteer opportunities Habitat has to offer. Email ecollet@gdmhabitat.org to schedule a time. The orientation session only takes about 1 hour.
  • Step 3: Fill out a skills assessment form. This will help us know what type of projects you would like to work on (learn) and what prior experience (if any) you have in different areas of construction. This will be provided to you before your orientation session.
  • Step 4: The paperwork is complete and you are educated about Habitat, it’s time to jump into the core crew! We will start including you in our weekly emails where you can begin to pick and choose the jobs you want to participate in and will receive all the latest and greatest information about the organization.
If you are ready to schedule an orientation session please email ecollet@gdmhabitat.org or complete the form below to set up a time that works for you.
