Homeownership

Are you an individual or family looking for an opportunity to buy a simple, affordable house? The GDM Habitat homeownership program offers qualified families and individuals the opportunity for an affordable mortgage. The application process takes several months, and the homeownership program typically takes between 12 and 24 months to complete.

To begin your application, you must complete the pre-application screening form during an Open Application Period at the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity office (2200 E Euclid Ave., Des Moines, IA 50317).
The next Open Application Period is January 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8.

In order to start the application process, you MUST BRING:

  • $20.00 money order for credit report fee (will only be used if you choose to go through the application process)
  • Copies of your three most recent months of pay stubs or income history for all adults living in the household.
  • A valid photo ID AND a copy of that ID for Habitat to keep.

Ability to Pay

Families who partner with GDM Habitat purchase their home from Habitat with a 20-30 year affordable mortgage.

Families complete 300-400 hours of sweat equity helping build their home and 24 hours of pre-purchase homebuyer education.
