“To be able to have stability and feel comfortable in a home means everything to me and my family. For my children to have something they can call their own and decorate the way they want to is something we’ve always talked about.”

– Jennifer, Habitat homeowner

Jennifer has called Des Moines home since she was a teenager. Today, after closing on a three bedroom Habitat home in 2021, home is more real than ever for Jennifer and her two children.

The journey to homeownership was an uphill road for Jennifer, who now works for the Iowa Department of Human Services. She first tried to secure a traditional mortgage, but credit and savings kept her from making the leap from renting. Jennifer turned to Habitat and got connected with our financial education and housing counseling services.

Working closely with a Habitat counselor, Jennifer was able to clear collections from her credit totaling more than $700 and build savings of over $2,000. After closing on her home in Des Moines’ East Side, Jennifer still had a healthy emergency fund, and her savings continue to grow thanks to the affordable mortgage provided by Habitat. Every year, homebuyers like Jennifer whose applications were not immediately accepted complete
counseling and financial education and move on into our homeownership program.
