A world where everyone has a decent place to live – Habitat for Humanity embraces this vision. At GDM Habitat, we magnify the impact of our local work through global giving and hands-on service trips.
We’ve built hope for over 720 families outside the United States since our inception, with lifetime financial support surpassing $3.2 million. What’s more, 24 teams of GDM Habitat Global village volunteers have traveled and built homes alongside hard-working families in Nepal, Malawi and El Salvador. Last year, GDM Habitat was ranked #7 out of about 1200 affiliates for contributions to our global partners.
Out of continuing concern for the health and safety of all our staff members, volunteers, partners and the people we serve, and recognizing the increased operational challenges brought forth during the pandemic, Habitat for Humanity International has postponed the resumption of Global Village travel until a safe and quality experience can be provided.
El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. Habitat El Salvador has been a tithe partner to GDM Habitat since 2004. They were selected because of the overwhelming need for new and improved housing in the country as well as numerous community connections between people in the Des Moines community and El Salvador. Our last Global Village trip to El Salvador was in January of 2020.
Nepal is a land-locked Asian country bordered by India and China. Habitat for Humanity Nepal has been a tithe partner since 2014. Refugee camps in Nepal once served as homes to more than 100,000 Bhutanese, some of whom have settled in Central Iowa and become GDM Habitat homeowners. Our last Global Village trip to Nepal was in November of 2019.
Malawi is a small, land-locked country in southeastern Africa. Habitat for Humanity Malawi has been a tithe partner since 2014. We are inspired by Habitat Malawi’s work providing homes that allow orphans and vulnerable children to remain in their own communities, as well as their collaboration with microfinance institutions. Our last Global Village trip to Malawi was in July of 2019.
