From a broken down trailer to an undersized apartment, and now to a home of their own, Wendy and her two children, Dylan and Miranda, completed a long journey. On April 15, 2005 they accepted the keys to their new home during a dedication ceremony at 1621 12th Street in Des Moines.
In partnership with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, volunteers from corporate sponsors, The Members Group, joined by many local credit unions, and Qwest, worked through the winter to provide the Ewald family a decent and affordable home. Also providing much of the volunteer labor was the Building Technologies Class of Des Moines Central Campus. The class frequently partners with Des Moines Habitat to give its students hands-on experience in new construction.
Ewald, who works at Home Depot in Ankeny, was often on site during the build, contributing her 350 hours of “sweat equity” to the project. “The thing that always kept me going,” Ewald said, “was knowing how much Habitat believed in me and what I was doing.”
