Nyachan is originally from Sudan and came to the US in 1996. Nyanchan has a janitorial job that she enjoys very much and hopes to continue. She has four children who were all born in the United States; Low (11), Buay (9) whose name means bright light, Parman (6) whose name means equality, and Nyakoor (3).
The children’s father, Kong, is teaching his children the language they speak in Sudan – the Nuer dialect to keep them connected with their heritage and culture.
Their goals are to give the children a good foundation in life before they become adults, in Kong’s words, “to ground them.” Nyachan looks forward to her children getting a good education in the United States. She is also looking forward to helping to build a foundation for her family, a home she can be proud of and gain a sense of ownership.
